Maintenance Mechanic


The Maintenance Mechanic will perform a wide variety of duties and tasks predominantly associated with the mechanical (millwright) discipline. These duties and tasks include a multitude of maintenance interventions ranging from basic parts replacements to equipment refurbishment to optimizing equipment performance to advanced troubleshooting. Maintenance activities include, but are not limited to, inspection, (parts) replacements, alignment, balancing, installation, and refurbishment. The Mechanic is required to understand and maintain complex manufacturing equipment including their operating principles and its function in the plant. Additionally, Mechanics are expected to understand equipment function and application to the extent that equipment performance can be optimized. Individuals will work closely with manufacturing to gain a detailed understanding of operating parameters to ensure that maintenance interventions are both appropriate and effective, including but not limited to configuration, set-up, troubleshooting and repair. Must have the ability to think in abstract terms, solve complex problems and apply troubleshooting skills. The Mechanic will be required to maintain mechanical power transmission equipment including drives and conveying equipment employed in a variety of factory specific applications. Fluid systems, including liquid, pneumatic, and hydraulic, will be maintained by the Mechanic. Fluid flow principles and requirements must be understood to troubleshoot system operation. The Mechanic will be required to weld, cut, braze, and solder a variety of materials. This includes welding carbon steel using the SMAW and GMAW processes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – Education and Experience:

    1. Candidate must, at a minimum, possess:
        1. 2-year technical degree (such as Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Design, Machinist & Toolmaker, or related degree) OR must have fully completed a state-approved external millwright apprenticeship AND a minimum of 1 year full-time millwright experience depending on the degree.


      1. A High School degree or diploma although a GED certificate is acceptable AND a minimum of 5 consecutive years of full-time industrial millwright experience.
    2. Candidates must not have been removed or demoted from a prior Maintenance Mechanic classification within the last two (2) years, unless related schooling or other skill advancement has been completed and been approved by the hiring manager.
    3. Candidates will be required to take the following tests. The test scores will be considered along with skills and abilities to determine whether a candidate is the most qualified for the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – Knowledge & Technical Skills:

Minimally qualified Maintenance Mechanics must be experienced as required in bullet A of the Education and Experience section AND able to immediately perform the following job functions with minimal to no instruction or supervision:

  • Possess basic keyboarding skills and be able to navigate or quickly learn to navigate necessary software programs in the Windows Operating environment.
  • Must be able to read, write and clearly communicate in English.
  • Perform basic to advanced troubleshooting of equipment mechanical issues.
  • Interpret drawings, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Install and troubleshoot bearings, seals, and gaskets.
  • Install, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot equipment generally classified as mechanical power transmission including gearboxes/drives, transmissions, conveyors (belt, scroll, bucket), and rollers.
  • Install, troubleshoot, and align shafts and couplings (laser or dial alignment).
  • Fabricate and install tubing and piping systems, including fittings, manufactured from various materials.
  • Install, maintain, rebuild, replace, and troubleshoot valves.
  • Install, maintain, rebuild, replace, and troubleshoot centrifugal or positive displacement pumps.
  • Maintain, repair, and replace fans and blowers.
  • Cut metals using plasma and/or oxyacetylene equipment.
  • Understand continuous improvement and concepts of optimizing mechanical equipment operation.
  • Understand and use precision measurement equipment.
  • Basic welding skills.


Physical duties required include but are not limited to the following:

  • Lifting/carrying, pushing/pulling, manual tool operation, hand work, standing, walking, sitting, hand manipulation and strength, bending, twisting, reaching, squatting, crouching, kneeling and crawling. Individuals are required to climb ladders and stairs.
  • Work is primarily indoors, but may involve working outdoors for periods of time. Indoor temperatures may exceed 80 degrees F and outdoor temperatures may fall below 0 degrees F.
  • Must be able to safely navigate all areas of plant including wet, sticky, snowy, dusty, uneven, and/or broken flooring areas. Will be exposed to dust, dirt, mud, condensation.


Maintenance Mechanics will work a revolving seven day schedule /12 hour days.
Mechanics are scheduled 36 hours one week and 48 hours the next week.
The hourly rate of pay is $21.13/hour.
Please note there is scheduled overtime and double time built into the revolving schedule, therefore the straight time equivalent hourly rate is $25.15/hour.
